What is dns@insidesystems.net?

dns@insidesystems.net is fully-featured free DNS hosting service.

Is it really free?

Yes it is, though a small donation would be appreciated.

How do I use it?

Signup, make your domain and add your records, then tell your registrar that your name servers are a.ns.insidesystems,net, b.ns.insidesystems.net, c.ns.insidesystems.net and d.ns.insidesystems.net. Easy!

What's special about dns@insidesystems.net?

dns@insidesystems.net is easy to use whether you are regular person, an über-geek, or an ISP. In addition to a web-based GUI, it also provides a fully buzzword-compliant, authenticated and secure REST interface to allow simple, reliable integration with your billing and monitoring systems.

Why another free hosting service?

We needed this software for ourselves. Some of our clients are ISPs with complex DNS hosting requirements, and it became clear that we'd outgrown our helper scripts and text files. None of the existing DNS services met our needs, so we built a new one. Then we decided to give it away for free.

What makes dns@insidesystems.net special?

We support lots of record types. Not just A, CNAME, NS and MX. We also support SRV, TXT and PTR records. Also, we have the aforementioned REST-based interface, for simple and secure integration with pretty much anything.

What are the limitations?

  • Free accounts get a maximum of 3 domains, containing a total of 60 records.
  • Records in free accounts have a minimum TTL of 24 hours.
  • Only class C reverse delegations are supported, at the moment.
  • AXFR is currently unavailable.
  • Some of the more exotic records like AAAA or NAPTR are not yet supported.
But we're not fans of restriction, so don't be surprised if we remove restrictions and add features, moving into the future.
